Awakened characters have become so by either realizing the truth themselves or, far more likely, an outside force that has intervened in their lives. While as with Sleepers, the Awakened can come from a great variety of sources, they all have one key thing in common; their neural network has been separated from the ever-present Neural Cloud and removed from under the constant eye of the Curator.

However, despite this separation, most Awakened can still operate and live in Exhibit societies without arousing suspicions; making them exceptional agents and spies.

Exhibits who have become awakened but not separated do not remain free for very long as the Curator is pathologically eager to stomp out any hints of pollutants in its great experiment. It is not unknown of Outlanders, particularly the Butterfly Initiative, to willfully awaken sleepers without separating them to lure Curator hunter units into traps (while this practice is considered to be in gross violation of Hegemonic Military Code of Conduct and would lead to court martials if discovered).

Augmented Awakened have had their implanted neural network readjusted into a beneficial boost, turning the Curator’s supertechnology to their own purpose. Most Awakened in the service of the Reformation have been augmented this way.

Such augmentation can provide them a wide variety of traits, but there are a few that are common across all augmented awakened as detailed in the Archetype.

Additionally, the awakening can also bring the fore seemingly extranormal abilities through the applications of advanced science – becoming the oddities known as Ghostmen.

Once a resident is awakened, and the realization hits them, they should typically be removed from the Phrenic Haze – else they will have a very short future beyond the awakening (the enemy Frequency of Appearance becomes a 15).

All residents, whether part of the Hegemonic forces or not, will have their meta-traits replaced by the following.
